The Perfect Move: Keith's Surprise Proposal During a Game of Chess

At Yates & Co Jewelers, we’re lucky to hear incredible proposal stories—but every now and then, one comes along that’s both clever and heart-melting. This is one of those moments.

Our customer planned a surprise engagement that took place at the beautiful La Tourelle Hotel & Spa in Ithaca, NY—a charming and romantic destination that made the perfect backdrop for a memorable “yes.”

After a lovely dinner, the couple went for a casual evening stroll on the property. Near a giant outdoor chessboard, they ran into a few friendly strangers. With the plan in motion, our proposer asked them to take a quick photo—setting the stage for what would become a moment to remember.

Then came the twist.

“I asked my fiancé to grab the queen piece while I grabbed the king…”

Little did she know, this wasn't just a fun pose—it was part of the proposal. As she reached for the queen, he gave a subtle “shhh” sign to their impromptu photographers, who instantly caught on and started snapping away like pros.

When she turned around… there he was, down on one knee, holding thethe ring that would change everything. A glistening pink diamond set in a gorgeous rose gold band.  She said yes. ♟?
