Lavender star sapphires from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) are rarer than traditional blue star sapphires. What makes them “star” sapphires? It’s because in certain lighting, it displays a six rayed star pattern, known as asterism, which appears to float across the surface when light hits it. This phenomenon is caused by tiny, needle-like rutile inclusions aligned in the crystal of of a cabochon-cut gem.
