Rolex Oysterdate Precision
Stainless Steel, 1954
This is a fascinating vintage Rolex. This is a genuine Rolex from 1954. This model is called an OYSTERDATE PRECISION. It is a manual wind type. Made in stainless steel, 69 years ago. Only 1 owner - you will be the 2nd. It's still in very good condition and runs well.
This model has a 34mm wide case, which was standard at that time. Over the years, the Rolex case sizes have gotten larger. Eventually, the standard size of a man's Rolex grew to 36mm. In 2009, the Datejust was also made available in the large size of 41mm. The 34mm size is still popular with vintage collectors, ladies, and in the Asian markets.
The watch case is stainless steel and the crystal is acrylic. The dial is cream-colored and shows some vintage patina, which is typical of a dial of this age. Many collectors appreciate this. The new owner could get the dial refinished, and I can hook you up with our Rolex dial refinisher who can transform your Rolex!
The case is stamped between the lugs BREVET 6497. "BREVET" means Swiss Patent. This was found on many Rolex watch cases in the 1950s. The 6497 is the movement number. On the other side, between the lugs, it is stamped 46196, which is the watch's serial number.
It comes with the original stainless steel Rivet style Oyster band with a fliplock clasp. This bracelet has been shortened, however, and the original owner lost the two links that were removed. So now it would fit only a small-sized wrist, or a ladies wrist. For this reason, we are also including a premium black leather strap.
The story on this watch is interesting. A really nice 90-year-old gentleman came into our shop looking to sell his watch. He didn't have any children to leave it to. And he knew our business had a good reputation for purchasing vintage jewelry and Rolexes. So he hired a taxi to drive him down to see us. He goes back in time and tells me when he got drafted into the Korean War. While stationed in England, he had saved up some money so he could buy a nice watch. This kept his mood positive as he was really missing home. When he finally gets enough money he goes to the PX exchange. The day finally arrives to buy his Rolex! And this is that Rolex.
In 1968, he had to get it serviced and kept his service paperwork. It is included with the watch.
He planned on selling it around 2019, so he got it serviced by the local Rolex dealer. They polished the case, and the bracelet and cleaned the movement, replacing the worn-out parts. It keeps (pretty good) time and presents very nicely.
We hope this beautiful Rolex vintage watch gets a wonderful new second home.
